Gēn is the Chinese word for root. The owner-chef revisits his culinary roots, nostalgic flavours and childhood memories with a tasting menu driven by local seasonal produce, especially fish. The courses never fail to surprise; plating is always aesthetically pleasing, and sometimes playful, such as the silky chicken soup in a glass bottle. The minimalistic room with pale wood tones, full-length windows and an open kitchen feels cosy and relaxing.

根 is a place that gives prominence to the reflection of Our Malaysian Story. We gave careful thought to how Malaysia's quality produce and local flavour fused with the intangible. Through food we translate relinquished memories, cultures, and experiences into something tangible that our guests can be a part of.

GastroMonth Kuala Lumpur and Penang 2023 is the first of its kind in Malaysia. The month-long event in June 2023 allows discerning diners to enjoy specially curated menus at over 40 restaurants recommended in the MICHELIN Guide Kuala Lumpur and Penang 2023.

Gēn 根, which in Chinese signifies “ground roots”, stays loyal to its origins by utilizing regional
ingredients found diversely across Malaysia. Our menu concentrates on using the freshest and
seasonal ingredients to create memorable food experience. We draw inspiration from traditional
Malaysian flavours; boldly and entirely based on the purest form of local ingredients.
Gēn 根 was placed in the Top 100 of Asia’s Best Restaurants 2021 and we believe this is just the
beginning of our journey to introduce local Malaysian flavours to the rest of the world.
