Origins of FunNow. Where did the multi-million dollar idea come from? It wasn't the first time a bunch of fun loving alcoholics had an idea…

It was spring time at the Unforgettable Usine in Eindhoven (south of the Netherlands) where we first had the inkling of an idea for FunNow. The four of us agreed to meet on a Friday after work, the days were getting longer again and the deceptive sun was out. It was warm by Dutch standards, 18 degrees Celsius. Comfortable enough to be out and about again.

The food was always great here, there was a good selection of beers and the service was good so we came back often. TK and CC came by train from Den Haag, TK was a buyer side tech analyst, CC was a Intern while studying Economics, both were at ING. Pei-Yi was also working there, but we met up early because she had some errands to run. I worked at the right here in Eindhoven with Philips as a SAP consultant.

Why oh why did we give up everything in NL? By Taiwan standards, you are expected to get a decent salary, preferably an office job, check. You are also expected to be able to have a house and a car, check. Actually the pay was great, it was possible to have all that, pay for your mortgage and invest or save at the same time. The next step was to start a family and make babies.

After finishing our order and going through a few glasses of good Belgian beer, the 11% kind, we started to wonder why isn't there something that shows us where it is good to eat or drink, where are the interesting places that would be interesting for us. Voila, FunNow was born. We didn't know what to call it at the time and we had silly names like FunGo, or GoFun etc. While under the influence of alcohol, we thought these names were fantastic. We had to rely on the word of mouth and my brilliant initiative to book this place via telephone, so kudos to me, but FunNow would've saved me so much time.

Two years later, we are now in Taiwan, building FunNow into a multimillion dollar company. Doesn't sound so crazy now, but before the funding came in, I looked in the mirror and wondered if I and my friends were crazy. The truth is we are still crazy. Crazy for life itself. Everyday we decide what direction we want to go, how to invest in the people that believe in the same dream and if they are not as crazy as we are, how do we make them as crazy for life as we are? In fact, one of our interview questions for newcomers is “Do you drink?”.

P.S. Some may have wondered, the pics are not from Usine in Eindhoven, I couldn't find them. Boohoo.
